Crowns & Bridges
Crowns
Crowns – also known as “caps” are coverings placed over your existing tooth to support it.
Why do I need a crown?
Crowns can be used to support teeth that are cracked or broken down where there is not enough tooth structure left to hold a filling in place. They are often used to support teeth that have had root canal treatment as crowns then seal and protect the tooth.
What are crowns?
Crowns can be made from several different materials such as:
A crown sits over your existing tooth so therefore tooth decay and gum disease can still occur around a crown which is why good oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups with our dentist Llanelli are essential.

Bridges

Why do I need a bridge?
Bridges are used to replace missing teeth. This is important to maintain a healthy smile and ensure teeth on either side of the missing teeth are supported so they do not tilt or drift into the space.
What is a bridge?
There are 2 different types of bridge:
- A resin retained bridge
- A conventional bridge
A resin retained bridge uses a metal wing to attach to the adjacent tooth to support the false tooth that fills the gap. These are the most minimally invasive as it is cemented onto the adjacent tooth by just the wing.
A conventional bridge consists of 1 or more crowns that fit on teeth on either side of the gap and anchor the false tooth in place.
Like with crowns a good oral hygiene regime and regular check-ups are essential to take good care of your bridge and ensuring its longevity.
What does a crown/bridge appointment involve?

Here at Murray Street Dental, we have a Cerec machine that allows crowns and bridges to be made and fitted in one day. This means or is quicker and simpler than your traditional crown/ bridge appointments. The time taken to prepare your teeth for the crown/bridge will vary depending on the tooth type. A camera is then used to scan your teeth removing the need for messy, uncomfortable moulds to be taken. We can then design your crown/bridge which will accurately and comfortably fit your mouth. The crowns are then made in a milling machine right here at the Practice. Along with the furnace which enables us to “glaze” the crown-making it look as natural as possible. As these are made at the Practice you will no longer be required to have temporary crowns/ bridges for several weeks while waiting for the dental laboratory to make your permanent crown/ bridge.
Having a Cerec machine makes the whole procedure a lot quicker and a lot more comfortable for you.
